When the Orlando Magic employed Jamahl Mosley as head coach in 2021, the staff and Mosley confronted difficult obstacles as they began a recent rebuild.
Now, nearly three years later, with Orlando contending for an Japanese Convention playoff spot, staff officers and Mosley have determined to proceed their partnership. The Magic and Mosley agreed to a contract extension that can run via the 2027-28 season, the staff introduced Tuesday. The brand new deal doesn’t embrace a staff possibility for the 2027-28 season, a league supply mentioned.
Orlando has compiled a 37-28 file this season and are in fifth place within the East standings, with first-time All-Star ahead Paolo Banchero and third-year ahead Franz Wagner rising as cornerstone gamers and third-year guard Jalen Suggs growing into one of many league’s most tenacious perimeter defenders.
Mosley has been a driving power within the roster’s improvement. There’s the tangible: The Magic rank fifth leaguewide in defensive effectivity, limiting opponents to 111.3 factors scored per 100 possessions. After which there’s the intangible: Orlando’s younger roster has unusual camaraderie and is extensively thought to be one of many league’s highest-effort groups on protection, with gamers typically crediting Mosley and his assistant coaches for fostering that staff spirit.
Mosely’s preliminary contract, signed in 2021, ran via the 2024-25 season. So, Mosley’s new contract extension successfully provides three further seasons: the 2025-26, 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons.
Why did the Magic do that now?
Mosley has earned the contract extension, with gamers and staff executives alike praising him for the staff’s progress and the gamers’ improvement. Merely put, it is sensible to proceed the partnership, and there was no cause to attend. Moreover, by including extra years to Mosley’s deal proactively, the staff and Mosley have prevented any hypothesis about Mosley’s future that would have derailed the staff’s momentum.
